Saxony5 2.0 is the continuation of the Saxony5 transfer network, which has been funded since 2018 as part of the federal-state initiative “Innovative University” (IHS). This initiative pools the expertise and resources of the five Saxon universities of applied sciences (HAW) in Dresden, Leipzig, Zwickau, Zittau/Görlitz, and Mittweida in order to jointly strengthen research-based knowledge and technology transfer, known as the Third Mission.
In the initial project, a wide range of transfer activities on innovative topics were carried out between 2018 and 2022 as part of the cross-location transfer laboratories, thus creating an interdisciplinary research environment. The so-called “Factory of the Future” co-creation labs each focus on an economically or socially relevant topic and, in the first funding phase, pooled the technical strengths and experimental capabilities of the universities. The pooling of expertise has created a value-added network that serves as a central point of contact for companies and provides an opportunity to find and form new contacts and collaborations.
In the second funding phase of the Saxony5 transfer network, transfer activities are to be sustainably consolidated for a further five years. This will enable the continued promotion of networking between the five Saxon universities in a sustained university grid and actively support the transfer of knowledge and technology. The focus here is particularly on gaining insights into how good transfer can be achieved in order to increase the effectiveness and professionalism of the transfer formats used. By further developing the transfer formats, the conditions for more efficient transfer processes can be created. This can contribute to improving cooperation between universities of applied sciences and regional partners from business, industry, and society, as well as to sustainable exchange.
The subprojects of the five universities of applied sciences focus on the application areas of “production,” “energy,” and “environment.”
The Institute for Health, Aging, Work, and Technology (GAT) at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences will deal with the subproject “Ambient Assisted Living” in the transfer field of “production.” The focus here is on the world of work 4.0 and on participation in digitalization, care, and mobility for older generations. To this end, the AAL laboratory, which was set up during the first project period in cooperation with the Görlitz housing association KommWohnen, will be used to test assistance technologies for older generations and discuss development opportunities. Thanks to the institute's many years of expertise in the areas of technical assistance systems in care, occupational health management, and the compatibility of care and work, a new quality of transfer of research results into practice can be achieved.
As part of the “Innovative University” initiative launched by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Joint Science Conference, and the federal states, Saxony5 2.0 will be able to further expand and establish knowledge and technology transfer in Saxony over the next five years.
Saxony5 2.0 is funded over a period of five years as part of the “Innovative University” program by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMFTR) and the Joint Science Conference.
