How can older people live independently in their own homes for as long as possible – even when faced with health restrictions? And how can technology help without becoming a burden? We have been addressing these questions in the AAL Laboratory since 2019. The AAL Laboratory Görlitz is an existing research laboratory with elements of a model apartment for technology consultation within a senior-friendly housing complex run by the Görlitz housing company KommWohnen. It is used to transfer research results into practice. For this purpose, regular viewings and housing and technology consultations are held there, where current assistive technologies are presented to a broader public.
AAL stands for Ambient Assisted Living – technologies that support everyday life in the background. In the AAL lab, we test precisely such solutions: sensors that automatically summon help in the event of a fall, devices that remind people of important appointments or medications, smart lighting and heating systems, and easy-to-use assistance systems for household and communication.
Since 2019, the AAL lab has been a space for people to think, participate, and help shape things. And we are constantly evolving: always looking for new ideas and possibilities that make life at home easier, safer, and more dignified.
The lab is set up like a real home a place where technology can be tried out and evaluated in a familiar environment. We're not interested in advertising or sales: We don't pursue any commercial interests; we want to evaluate technical aids neutrally, critically, and with common sense.
To this end, we consciously seek dialogue with caregivers, seniors, and family caregivers. Their experiences, wishes, and concerns are central to us. We want to work together to discover which technologies are truly useful—and where their limitations lie. This is the only way to develop solutions that truly improve everyday life.
Come by, get involved and shape the future of living with us.
